Detangling the Stigma
Hair has always been a significant way that people across cultures express themselves.

However, if you’re like us, you know that hair comes with a lot of ‘extensions’ so to speak…

This month we are calling folks to detangle the politics around hair, redefine the standards for ourselves, and reclaim our own visions of beauty.

How have European standards and societal expectations affected your relationship with your hair?

What tips and tricks have helped you care for and style your natural hair texture?

How do we reclaim autonomy of our natural hair and push back against the patriarchy?

Sign up here if you'd like a specially-reserved, 5 minute spot during the meetup to share your story relating to this month's theme
Please note if you share your story here it becomes public within our community across multiple platforms

      Whiteboard Session
Watch in real time how our community whiteboard is built on Zoom. We invite all attendees to contribute to the board. For those who are visually impaired, we will be sure to describe what's on the whiteboard. The whiteboard is used as a space for TMS members to share their takeaways from the meetup, the commitments we pledge to make, and a space where people can have fun and draw whatever resonated with them at the event.

This is where you’ll find our Community Guidelines, and Maria P. P. Root’s Bill of Rights for People of Mixed Heritage and Multiracial Oath of Responsibility. We lean on this language as a pillar to create safe spaces for critical conversation.

      RECAP BLOG
Detangling the Stigmas covered how our natural hair is easily oppressed & politicized but is also a tool for self-discovery, worth, and cultural expression. The community shared empowering stories embracing the history, genetics, and natural qualities of all the hairs on our bodies. Together, we reclaimed our beautiful hair from within and continue to show up authentically in our everyday lives.

      What is The Mixed Space?
TMS is a community organization celebrating intersectional identities by hosting monthly meetups that navigate conversations on identity, culture, and civic engagement.
